Part 1: Artist Statement
My grandmother has always been very artistic and shared with me the beauty of art. She taught me that art is perfectly imperfect and all the little "imperfections" is what makes each piece your own. I recently have been able to create what I imagine and love it!
My style is very modern and I use black, grey and white in all of my pieces. I really like the darker colors. This style reflects who I am as a person because I am a minimalist and like the smooth, classy, and clean. I want my art to reflect my characteristics on how I can be classy but also funky. I want my piece to inspire others to their own ideas and to go further than just modern.
Without art, I would be very stressed and wouldn't have an outlet. Art allows me to breathe through my busy life. Art gives me a moment of silence in my head and an escape of reality. Most importantly, art set the foundation for my relationship with my grandmother. We would not be as close as we are now without our "art days" where we sit in her studio and create our masterpieces. With art you are able to express yourself and not be ashamed of it and this can relate to real world experiences. You should be able to express who you truly are and art gives you that.

Part 2: Images of Artwork and Rationale
Visual Arts Standard #1: Artistic Thinking and Behaviors - I can approach artistic problem-solving using multiple solutions and the creative process.
This work was created using tin foil for the shape and polymer clay to mold the duck. My inspiration came from the movie Zootopia because I loved the concept of animals wearing clothes. I had to use creative problem solving skills in order to create the tie and suit without using a lot of unnecessary clay.

The first attempt of this piece failed miserably and we had to find a better way for our work to last. The original slice was too big and the cardboard ended up giving in creating a big dip on the outside of the apple. Not only that, but we had used a new type of paper mache technique and it turned out lumpy, so we had to start over. Our solution to this problem was to downsize our slice and to use the original paper mache technique.

I only had two days to create my wire sculpture and with this time scrunch I had to be creative in how I executed this peace in a timely manner. I wrapped the wire around my water bottle, tapped it on the foundation and began painting the base coat. I wanted the piece to flow and have all of the layers be under the same family. I started with black and slowly added white to achieve the grey I wanted and continued this process until I reached the foundation. By using this color palette I was able to finish my piece in two days!

Visual Arts Standard #2: Responding - I can apply literacy skills to describe, analyze, interpret, and evaluate art.
By utilizing the five step critique process I have been able to reflect on my artwork and highlight the parts that went right and that could improve. This allows futures me to look back and make adjustments to improve my art! This process also makes sure I am aware of which elements of art and principals of designs I was intending to use and if I executed it successfully. I also can give my peers constructive criticism to help them improve their artwork. in an area that they might have not seen before.
5 Step Critique
Visual Arts Standard #3: Connecting - I can understand the relationship among the arts, history and world culture. I can make connections among the arts and to other disciplines, to goal-setting, and to interpersonal interaction.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is very important to the entire group, therefore we decided to make an apple to represent this aspect of our lives. Personally, apples are one of my favorite snacks because they are sweet and pair nicely with peanut butter. For the other assignments I had to set individual SMART goals and reflect as I continued to make sure I stayed on track to meet each one
Visual Arts Standard #4: Producing and Presenting - I can create an original body of work and and then select my best work to present it in a portfolio and an exhibition.
Self Directed #1:
These three pieces took weeks to create as centering on the wheel was a challenge for me. After I managed to center the piece pulling up to make the cups even was equally as difficult because I kept being overly aggressive and pulling up too fast. After trial and error I created these pieces and was finally able to decide how I wanted to paint each one with character. |
Part 3: Evaluation of Portfolio
This portfolio was my most successful one during my high school career. I was challenged during all of my pieces to get what I had imagined on paper and then actually create it. I have grown so much during this semester while overcoming difficult challenges such as center clay on the wheel and liking what I created. I found that each piece is imperfect in their own perfect way and learned to like each piece individually.
